“LANGUAGE IS A SOURCE OF MISUNDERSTANDING” – McLuhan,1964

Language is a form of communication that connects people but sometimes we have different interpretations of a particular message. Also there are language barriers like dialects, noise, and culture. We have ways to use our own language that’s why it can result to misunderstanding.

Does the user’s/audience’s own background or experience affect the interpretation of messages? How?

We use our schema or the prior knowledge to interpret messages that we received. We have a different experience that results to our beliefs and virtues that we use to understand and decode a message.

Is it possible that a different individual derives a different meaning from the message? Explain.

Yes, it is possible because as said above we have different experiences that we use to interpret a message.

What information codes, conventions and messages about our country is communicated through advertisements?

Mostly the health programs of the Department of Health (DOH) are spread through advertisements like the TBDOTS program, family planning, and bakuna shots. Now, we also have political propositions or petitions appearing as an advertisement, like the case about Duterte administrations’ martial law.

If you are to create a postcard for a place or organization of your choice, what technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important information and create the desired impression? Why?

I will use the popular technical and symbolic codes that are appropriate for the things I want to express or show. This is to let the readers or audience understand the context easily because the signs used are familiar to them.

How is understanding of the technical and symbolic codes contribute to media and information literacy?

If you know the basic or mostly of the technical and symbolic codes, you can understand and decode the information you will encounter in the media to acquire the correct interpretation of that given context.
